Year after year an increasing number of guests want to join the Varaždiners, or rather the citizens of Varaždin in their celebration of what for them is, one can safely say, is a traditional way of spending leisure time - a casual stroll through the streets of the city, or as the Varaždiners themselves would say - a špancir. Every year, come August, Varaždin is transformed into a colorful street entertainment venue for a week or two, a town of laughter and merriment. Numerous performers, musicians, actors and entertainers come out into the streets, and the entire town serves as a public area for presentation of Croatian tradition. The stands are full of traditional craft products, artifacts made by artists of applied arts, food and beverage prepared in traditional ways, and various souvenirs. During the Špancirfest, it is easy to get lost in Varaždin. Sailing the endless sea of imagination, and constantly attracted at every step by a different event, one does not realize how fast the time goes by. You can just stroll around the whole day and then ask yourself how come it is nighttime already, and why you have to go to sleep already.
