This exhibition in Pula's Town gallery is the first public presentation of a selection of donated works by Antun Motika, Pula and Istria's most eminent artist, as well as one of the leading 20th century Croatian artists. The collection consists of 29 works that best portray his work.
Antun Motika was one of those artists open to new art media, independent of any programme or tendency, without prejudice and expectations. This exhibition takes us back to the very beginnings of his work. In the small room on the first floor are works dating from his childhood and teenage years between 1912 and 1918. Among these are also seven works dating from the time before Motika's family left Pula. Specially interesting are two of his earliest works: 'Domestic animals' and 'Battle from the Balkan War' that Motika made when he was only 10 years old.
Altogether 22 works are displayed in the large room on the ground floor, 20 of which are paintings and two glass sculptures – 'Boškarin' and 'Goat'. These works date from 1932 to 1960, and are mostly delicate pastels and water colours.
