Mali Lošinj has a year-long tradition of spear-fishing. Back in 1950 the first gun for spear fishing arrived to Mali Lošinj as a new fishing equipment, making way to a new category - spear-fisher, that had not been mentioned in the Sea Fishing Act of that period.  Already back in 1956 there was a Championship of Northern Adriatic in spear-fishing in local waters of Lošinj, and in 1957 Mali Lošinj became known among spear-fishers due to its organization of the 1st World Championship in spear-fishing. Since then it has become a member of the world map of spear-fishing. Since 1957 Mali Lošinj is the location of the traditional competition - New Year's Cup in spear-fishing. There is a deep and unbroken bond between Lošinj people and spear-fishing, proved by a monument to spear-fisher in the center of Lošinj.Along to the competition itself, there will also be numerous accompanying manifestations, concerts, exhibitions, regattas...
