Diocletian’s palace is a memento of the magnificent history of Split, and we all know it, but the citizens of Split wish to emphasize the significance of the 1700 years of their lovely city in a still more symbolic manner – hence this manifestation. For ten days the city takes a journey into the Antiquity. The streets of the former palace are filled with strollers dressed in togas and tunics, the waterfront provides the venue for the procession of ancient-style carriages ferrying Emperor Diocletian and his suite to the Peristyle where His Imperial Eminence addresses his subjects – just as he used to so many centuries ago. The narrow streets are filled with mouth-watering aromas of the Mediterranean dishes – and for a moment it seems as if one has never stepped into the 21st century.
